Childhood crushes are so painful. Oh the agony of loving someone who you know would love you back if they just had the opportunity to met you. Who cares if he is 5 or 10 years older than you? Age differences are meaningless when you're in love! The daydreams these crushes inspire. The obsessions... to clip every photo out of every magazine you can find, and to know the lyrics of every song they sing, or movie line they spoke. The inevitability that your parents would not approve if they knew! The fact that you want to tell everyone that you're in love but at the same time keep it your own special secret. Luckily, most of us grow out of these crushes, learn what real love is and move on to a rich and rewarding adult relationship.
So this morning it all came back to me. There he was, on the tiny tv bolted to the front of my elliptical trainer at the gym. My crush. He was a singer. He had his own band. I listened to the song. I knew all the words once, and they were slowly coming back to me. I took a good look at him in the grainy film from years ago. He shook his long feathered hair, he flashed his gleaming Colgate smile, he danced in crazy gyrations while playing the electric keyboard, and I wondered... what did I ever see in K.C. and the Sunshine Band?
